| Welcome
to the Hagelberger Street web site. We are a collective of musicians,
primarily singer-songwriters and composers, who have been hanging
out, performing, writing songs, and recording together for over 30
years. The name of the collective is taken from the infamous
early-seventies-era music wohngemeinschaft (commune) located at Hagelberger
Straβe 14, in the Kreuzberg section of Berlin. All in all,
some configuration of Hagelbergers lived at number 14 for about five
years, and during this time the flat was inhabited by over 40 musicians
and other assorted humans. The picture at the right, taken in
the kitchen ca. 1971, shows Sammy, Bob, T. M., Tom, and Jesse involved
in some kind of philosophical discussion. The kitchen was usually
the only heated room in the apartment, so most (though not all)
of the action took place there, including the ingesting of large amounts
of caffeine and cheap beer, as well as the writing of songs (often
several at the same time).
The
picture on the left is the "now" counterpart to the "then"
picture above. It shows Joe, Ron, and Hans actually engaged
in the practice of making music! Though we all originally met
in Berlin, various Hagelbergers now live in London, Toronto, Cairo,
Santa Barbara, and Nashville. Over half of us remain in Berlin,
with Hans still a resident of Kreuzberg, the Hagelberger urwald.
We welcome your interaction with us through the web site. You
can send us emails, hunt for old friends, find out about upcoming
shows, listen to music samples, and purchase Hagelberger CDs.
